Civil Liberties Weekend is About You and Your Rights - Find out
more!
October
26, 2003, marks the 2-year anniversary of the passage of the USA
PATRIOT Act, the last day before the Muslim holiday Ramadan, and
the 450th anniversary of the martyrdom of Unitarian Michael Servetus.
Recognizing that weekend as a fitting time for people of all faith
traditions to affirm and celebrate fundamental freedoms, the UUA
has played a leadership role with other interfaith partners in declaring
October 24-26 as Witness for Civil Liberties Weekend. Through education,
worship, and community action, participating congregations can help
to ensure that freedom in the United States is truly for all people---regardless
of citizenship, nationality, race, or religion. From October 24-26,
congregations of all faiths across the United States are coming
together to think about Civil Liberties in the U.S., their value,
and how current policies impact our lives. The UUA is a supporter
of Witness
for Civil Liberties Weekend
.
This
is a time for study reflection, and action. Read and understand
more about the UUA's
Study Action Issue for 2002-2004 on Civil Liberties and read
the draft Statement of
Conscience on Civil Liberties. Find out about the UUA's role
in defending Civil Liberties through the last sixty years in "Ahead
of the Wave: UU Defense of Civil Liberties". And there's
more: you can read
books from Beacon Press on Civil Liberties, including Wendy
Kaminer's "Free
for All" and Martha Nussbaum's "For
Love of Country". Think about the actions you and your
congregation can take in influencing the role of civil liberties
in our lives, but start by reading "The
Real Rules"
from the UUA's Washington Office for Advocacy.
