Letter from the Executive Committee of the Board of Trustees
October 3, 2003
Dear Fellow Unitarian Universalists:
The resignation of a leader of our Association is a difficult event.
As members of the Executive Committee of UUA Board of Trustees,
we acknowledge with heavy hearts the resignation of Diane Olson
as Moderator of the Association. We are grateful to Diane for her
many years of commitment and service to our UU movement, and we
hope that she will continue to bring her gifts to Unitarian Universalism.
The work of the Association continues. At its June meeting, the
Board elected as First Vice Moderator the Rev. Ned Wight, trustee
from the Pacific Southwest District. He will serve as Acting Moderator
and preside at the Trustees' October 18-19 meeting, when a successor
will be appointed according to the provisions
of our Bylaws (Article VIII, Section 8.7).
At that meeting, the Board will appoint a person to assume the
Moderator's duties through GA 2004
next June in Long Beach. The Board will select the person they
feel is best qualified by experience, skills, and vision to fill
this important leadership position. We invite UUs interested in
being considered for this appointment to submit a letter outlining
their qualifications to:
UUA Board, c/o Nancy Lawrence
25 Beacon St.,
Boston, MA 02108,
or e-mailed to nlawrence@uua.org
or faxed to (617) 367-3237.
These names should be submitted on or before 12:00 noon Eastern
Daylight Time on Wednesday, October 15.
UUA Bylaws also specify that an election be held at "the next
regular General Assembly at which an election can be held."
(Article
VIII, Sec. 8.7) Legal Counsel Ned Lebensberger has advised us
that this would be the 2004 GA in Long Beach. If a contested election
is necessary, it will be conducted according to the rules and procedures
outlined in Article
IX of our Bylaws. The person
elected Moderator at the 2004 GA will serve until the conclusion
of GA 2005 (the balance of Diane's unexpired term).
The next regularly scheduled election for a full four-year term
will take place as originally scheduled in June, 2005, at the GA
in Fort Worth, Texas.
Please watch www.uua.org for further
developments as we move through this time of transition.
In faith,
UUA Board Executive Committee
Ned Wight, Acting Moderator
Wayne Arnason, Secretary of the Association
Lyn Conley, Finance Chair
Larry Ladd, Financial Adviser
Ed Wilde, 2nd Vice Moderator
