Statement from the Rev. William G. Sinkford, President
Unitarian Universalist Association
On the settlement of dispute between SEIU Local 254 and cleaning contractors in Boston

(Boston - November 4, 2002) As of October 24, the Service Employees International Union (SEIU) Local 254 has reached a settlement with cleaning contractors in the greater Boston area. I am exceedingly pleased to know that the Justice for Janitors campaign has been successful.

I know all UUs will join me in applauding this settlement which will result in better working conditions and benefits for the people who do this difficult and essential labor in our community. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many people and groups who worked hard to achieve a just settlement of this dispute: Mayor Thomas Menino of Boston; federal, state and local legislators; the cleaning contractors; the rank and file and leadership of Local 254; numerous community and student organizations; and the interfaith community led by the Greater Boston Interfaith Organization. I also extend my thanks and congratulations to the Unitarian Universalist congregations, ministers, and affiliate organizations, who worked in support of the janitors.

I am sure all of these individuals and organizations join me in our hope for justice in our land. Justicia en la tierra.
