Rev. William Sinkford

Alternatives to War With Iraq

From the Rev. William G. Sinkford, President
Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations

(Boston, MA - September 13, 2002) As President of the UUA, I yesterday added my signature to a letter from Churches for Middle East Peace addressed to President George Bush. The letter urges President Bush to explore every alternative to war with Iraq. While all Americans agree with the goal of a more secure world for ourselves and our neighbors, as religious people we believe that war will not further the cause of peace. Our voice joins with the many Muslim, Jewish, Buddhist, Christian and other religious leaders who oppose the pre-emptive use of military force.

My decision is grounded both in Unitarian Universalist principles and numerous General Assembly resolutions.

A copy of this letter can be found at http://www.cmep.org/letters/2002Sep12_BushReIraq.htm.
