Position Title: Program Associate for Racial and Ethnic Concerns: Assessment of Youth and Young Adult Ministries
Staff Group: Identity-Based Ministries
Reports to: Program Coordinator for Racial and Ethnic Concerns
Basic Purpose: To develop and conduct an assessment of the UUA ministry with youth and young adults of color and/or Latina/o Hispanic and multiracial identities; to advocate on behalf of youth and young adults who identify as Latina/o and Hispanic, multiracial, and/or people of color; and to encourage growth in Unitarian Universalist engagement with this ministry. This position is time limited with an expected time frame lasting between eighteen and twenty-four months.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Working closely with UUA Staff groups (Identity-Based Ministries, Youth Office, Young Adult and Campus Ministry, Lifespan Faith Development, and others), design and implement a process evaluating ministry with youth and young adults of color and/or Latina/o Hispanic and multiracial identities.
- Organize and lead a task force to evaluate how the UUA administration can grow in its support of this ministry.
- Ensure close collaboration with, and participation from, stakeholder groups external to the UUA administration
- Produce a comprehensive report of recommended changes that the Association could implement to better support youth and young adults of color, multiracial, and/or Latina/o Hispanic identity. The final report must be completed no later than December 1, 2008.
- Build strong relationships with, and advocate for, communities of youth and young adults who identify as Latina/o and Hispanic, multiracial, and/or people of color; and the professionals and volunteers who serve them. Attend district and national level events and serve as an advisor and mentor at those events.

This is an Exempt Grade 12 position (minimum $47,400, midpoint $59,900). Individual must be able to work independently and as a team player, be highly organized and experienced in working with youth and young adult communities. Excellent oral and written communication skills are required including knowledge of racial and ethnic identity development, anti-racism, anti-oppression, and multiculturalism. Computer competency is essential. Group facilitation, organizational change, and conflict management experience are highly desirable. Individual must be involved in and knowledgeable about issues relevant to communities of color and Latina/o and Hispanic communities and have familiarity with UU congregations. Masters degree or equivalent work experience in education, social work, counseling, or developmental psychology is desired. This position requires travel. Position will start in June, 2007. Position Title: Stewardship & Development Assistant
Staff Group: Stewardship and Development
Reports to: Director of Budget & Operations
Basic Purpose: Support the Stewardship & Development staff group in all aspects of their work. Assist with gift processing, gift acknowledgements, donor relations and stewardship, prospect research, and special projects and events related to successful fundraising. Implement special projects as requested.
Principal Responsibilities:
The current responsibilities and primary focus of the Stewardship & Development Assistant may vary from time to time based on the fundraising calendar and current staffing. Responsibilities and workload will be reviewed periodically and clearly communicated. The responsibilities and focus that are anticipated for the first three months will be to provide primary administrative support for all aspects of the UUA Legacy Gifts fundraising program and staff.
- Routine Legacy Gifts office operations. Provide support to Legacy Gifts Director. Handle phone calls, correspondence, filing, check deposits and requests, invoices, and photocopying. Set up and maintain donor files. Perform data entry in Raiser’s Edge and Excel spreadsheets. Assist with preparations for General Assembly and Legacy Gifts presentations.
- Assist with donor relations and marketing. Help donor prospects, church volunteers, UUA staff, and representatives of other UU entities understand planned gift options and umbrella giving. Handle routine inquiries regarding umbrella giving and Legacy Gifts gift options, information, and services. Prepare gift proposals. Assist with donor-relations projects and special mailings, including the Legacy newsletter, video memorial for General Assembly, and post-GA letter. Help produce print and web-based resources.
- Assist with new gifts and gift terminations. Under the direction of the Legacy Gifts Director, help complete new gifts. Track progress, handle enrollment/info forms and asset transfers, prepare gift agreements/contracts, obtain signatures, and send IRS receipts, gift acknowledgements and other correspondence as needed. Prepare and send welcome packets to new members of the UUA Legacy Society. Assist with administration and correspondence related to early terminations and matured bequest, trusts and other planned gift receipts.
- Perform other duties as requested by supervisor, the Director of Legacy Gifts, the Director of Budget & Operations, the Vice President for Stewardship and Development, the Associate V.P. for Stewardship and Development, the UUA Executive Vice President and President.

Position Title: Marketing Coordinator
Department: Communications/Publications
Reports to: Publishing Director
Basic Purpose: To plan and execute marketing activities for Skinner House and other UUA publications.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Performs promotional activities for Skinner House Books and other UUA publications: distributes and collects author questionnaires, seeks testimonials, maintains author contact; plans and writes promotional copy. For trade titles, sends out review copies and maintains review files. Responsible for trafficking materials between art, editorial and production.
- Maintains on-going contact with trade distributor: supplies appropriate title information and tracks their marketing activities for Skinner House.
- Enters Skinner titles in book award competitions.
- Leads the marketing team, including setting goals, analyzing sales, and maintaining the marketing budget.
- Updates and maintains Skinner House website, and updates Skinner House and UUA titles on the bookstore web site.
- Performs additional related duties as requested by supervisor, or in his/her absence, the Director of Communications, the Executive Vice President, President or Financial Vice President.

Position Title: Assistant to the Vice President and the Associate Vice President

Basic Purpose: Support all aspects of the work of the Vice President and the Associate Vice President of Stewardship and Development.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Support the Vice President and the Associate Vice President of Stewardship and Development. Write thank you letters, make phone calls, and help conceive and implement special projects, such as fund raising for specific projects, or preparing and delivering reports to donor prospects.
- Work closely with the Assistant to the President in matters related to the President’s fundraising activities. Under direction from supervisor, assist with special projects and meetings that involve the President in Stewardship and Development. Post and maintain a travel and meeting calendar for the staff group that shows the President’s activities related to the staff group’s mission.

Position Title: District Services Administrator

Principal Responsibilities:
- Budget Management. Prepare and maintain records and reports including budgets and personnel records for District Services. Evaluate data pertaining to costs in order to plan budgets. Develop and maintain record management system. Develop management control system to maintain costs within budget. Communicate appropriate budget details to supervisor, district staff members, and district presidents and district treasurers. Prepare financial reports for Director, his staff and both Executive Vice-Presidents as requested. Calculate, prepare and issue bills, invoices, and accountant statements and other financial statements. Make recommendations for improvements in the budget process or the budget development.
- Events Planning. Coordinate services for events, such as accommodation and transportation for participants, facilities, catering, signage, displays, special needs requirements, printing and event security. Arrange the availability of audio-visual equipment, transportation, displays, and other event needs. Confer with staff at a chosen event site in order to coordinate details. Design and implement efforts to publicize events. Evaluate and select trainers according to company needs. Inspect event facilities in order to ensure that they conform to management requirements. Maintain records of event aspects, including financial details. Meet with sponsors and organizing committees in order to plan scope and format of events, to establish and monitor budgets, and to review administrative procedures and event progress. Negotiate contracts with such service providers and suppliers as hotels, convention centers, and speakers. Organize registration of event participants. Plan and develop programs, agendas, budgets, and services according to customer requirements. Conducts post-event evaluations in order to determine how future events could be improved. Review event bills for accuracy, and approve payment.
- Office Management. Reviews records and reports pertaining to payroll. Identifies and resolves discrepancies or errors. Research, compile, and prepare reports, manuals, correspondence, and other information required by management. Maintains records of personnel, equipment and supplies. Conduct research, compile data, and prepare reports for consideration and presentation by executives.
Reviews and checks work of associates such as reports, records for accuracy and content, and corrects errors. Make recommendations to management concerning such issues as staffing decisions and procedural changes. Develop and/or update procedures, policies, and standards. Examines procedures and recommends changes to save time, labor, and other costs and to improve quality control and operating efficiency. Requisitions or orders supplies. Prepares expense vouchers and maintain travel expense accounts.

Position Title: Gulf Coast Response Coordinator

Reports to: Senior Associate Just Works and the Programs Director
* This is an 18 month grant funded position – full time/35 hour per week
Summary: The Unitarian Universalist Service Committee is seeking a Gulf Coast Response Coordinator to assume responsibility for the Gulf Coast volunteer program. This is a joint initiative of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) and UUSC. This new position, based in New Orleans, will build on the current Gulf Coast volunteer program.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Develop new relationships and maintain existing relationships with community organizations for effective partnerships.
- Together with partner organizations identify suitable volunteer opportunities for volunteers to offer service.
- Collaborate with the Cambridge based Volunteer Program Associate, around the scheduling of all aspects of the volunteer program. This will include orientation for the ongoing groups of volunteers; ensure volunteers receive anti-racism training; regular debriefing sessions with the volunteers.
- Maintain relationships with the UU Gulf Coast Congregations to encourage their effective partnership and participation in the program.
- Maintain the relationship of coordination and mutual support with other organizations, networks and individuals engaged in volunteer programs.
- Ensure that volunteer groups have access to the necessary information about follow-up work such as advocacy efforts undertaken by UUSC and UUA.
- Provide information about the volunteer program to the Senior Associate for Just Works and the Volunteer Program Associate in Cambridge as needed for ongoing communications and outreach.
- Provide narrative and financial reporting according to UUSC norms in the program unit, quarterly reports etc. and respond to questions for information for outreach and communication.
- Attend team meetings of the Just works unit in the UUSC programs department as requested by the Senior Associate.
- Perform other related activities as directed by the Programs Director
The ideal candidate will have:
- 3-5 years demonstrated project management experience in community work/organizing. Experience in disaster or crisis situations preferred.
- Demonstrated experience in coordinating programs, for example volunteer programs, youth programs, experiential learning.
- Excellent organizational skills, and a keen understanding of group dynamics.
- Demonstrated ability to be a strong team player, and at the same time the ability to work independently and take initiative.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills. Very strong inter-personal skills.
- Ability to delegate responsibility and work collaboratively with other staff members. Proven ability to multi-tas
- Deep sensitivity to how race, class and gender affected people and their ability to rebuild their lives in post Hurricane Gulf Coast. A clear anti-racism analysis necessary.
- Experience in situations requiring flexibility and ability to function in ambiguous situations.
- Experience in cross cultural situations in the US preferred and/or work cross culturally in an international setting.
- Experience with faith based organizations and with UUs preferred.
- A knowledge of work in social justice and a strong identification with UUSC’s mission.

Position Title: Program Associate for Peacemaking
Staff Group: Advocacy and Witness
Reports to: Assistant Director, Washington Office for Advocacy
Works in: UUA Washington Center, Washington, DC
Basic Purpose: To promote and support participation in the 2006-2010 Study/Action Issue, Peacemaking, using All Soul's Church, Unitarian, in Washington, DC, as the lead congregation for activities and new resources and especially engaging Washington area congregations.
Principal Responsibilities:
- In collaboration with the volunteer peacemaking implementation committee, coordinates appropriate resources for UU congregations and districts to use in an ongoing process of study, action and reflection about peacemaking, including by sharing best practices and creating new materials as needed.
- Supports congregations, especially by phone and email, in effectively using the resources to create meaningful dialogue and articulate common moral principles among people with divergent opinions about war, peace, and related issues.
- Works with congregations to encourage grassroots campaigns, which help them to act on religious values related to peace.
- Facilitates communication among congregations, groups, and individuals working on these issues.
- Works with the Commission on Social Witness to publicize the Peacemaking Study Action Issue and available resources.
- Represents the UUA in grassroots campaign coalitions related to peacemaking, in conjunction with Legislative Assistant for International Issues and other UUA staff.
- Works specifically with All Souls Church-Washington D.C. on these issues, using ASC as the first test for materials, a sounding board for programs, and a national flagship congregation in a strong position to take the lead on these issues. This part of the work will evolve and might involve such tasks as: coordinating national presence at national gatherings related to war, holding a national conference on War and Peace, creating War and Peace covenant groups, workshops, or ongoing classes for members of all ages, creating a worship service related to peace, and/or other initiatives supported by members of ASC. This work, involving ASC and other Washington area congregations, will be about 30% of the job, and will be done in close coordination with Louise Green, minister of social justice at All Souls Church.
- Strives to apply the principles of anti-racism and anti-oppression, including practicing accountability, in all of the responsibilities above.
- Other duties as required by supervisor, Director of Washington Office for Advocacy, Director of Advocacy and Witness, Executive Vice President, and President.
This is an Exempt, two-year internship position with benefits (starting salary $29,500) with start date of April 2, 2007, or as soon as possible thereafter. Title: Program Consultant (New Hampshire-Vermont-Northeast Districts)

Basic Purpose: To inspire and support Unitarian Universalst religious education programs and lifespan religious education in the NH-VT-NE districts. The focus will be to support district religious educators in their congregational work and support youth programs both at the congregation and district levels.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Help strengthen all facets of congregational Lifespan Religious Education through training, support, resources, and counsel to Religious Educators and Religious Education Committees.
- Encourage the development of strong cluster networks in the area of Lifespan Religious Education and youth programs for support, sharing of resources and training.
- Work with district committees and groups such as the Young Religious Unitarian Universalists and the Unitarian Universalist Young Adult Network.
- Support and strengthen district programs in Lifespan Religious Education.

The Director of Lifespan Faith Development (DLFD) is a joint employee of the Joseph Priestley District (JPD), with its principal office in Wilmington, DE, and the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA) with its principal office in Boston, MA. The DLFD supervises two other employees (Coordinator of Youth Activities & the Director of Young Adult & Campus Ministries. The DLFD reports to the JPD District Executive, although it is expected that all District employees will be in a covenantal relationship.
This position is one of covenantal religious leadership. Although it is not required that the DLFD be an ordained minister, it is expected that he or she will abide by the Code of Professional Practice for members of the UUA District Staff. UUA District Staff are bound by the Codes of Professional Practices of the UUMA, if they are ministers, and of the LREDA Code of Professional Practices, if they are religious educators, in addition to the Code for District Staff.
The DLFD is a spiritual role model and advocate for faith development education in local congregations of the JPD, for the religious professionals serving those congregations, and a passionate spokesperson for Unitarian Universalism in the JPD. This job description outlines the current job duties and expectations. The JPD is functioning in a form of governance known as Policy Governance. It is expected that the DLFD is willing to work with the District Executive and other District staff as they create and implement strategies to carry out the JPD Board’s vision to strengthen our congregations and grow our faith both spiritually and numerically.
Along with fulfilling all the duties and responsibilities required by the UUA for the position, currently the specific duties of the DLFD include:
Administrative
- Be in a supervisory role with the Director of Young Adult and Campus Ministries and the Coordinator of Youth Activities having regular meetings, supporting and directing their work, and guiding them through an annual assessment and setting of annual goals.
- Attend JPD Board meetings when requested by the District Executive and/or the Board.
- Develop good working relationships and a system of ongoing communication and support with other JPD staff.
- Develop good working relationships with the following groups and any additional groups as they are formed for the needs of the District:
• JPD-Youth Steering Committee (YSC)
• JPD-GWAREC (Greater Washington Association Religious Education Council)
• JPD-DSAREC (Delaware Susquehanna Area Religious Education Council)
• JPD-Liberal Religious Educators Association (LREDA) Chapter
• JPD-UUMA-PK Ministers Chapter
• JPD-CUUMA Ministers Chapter |
- Develop and maintain relationships with congregations within the JPD emphasizing connections with their religious education programs and youth programs. Develop a regular system for communication using the various means provided by the JPD and by being a visible presence at JPD functions.
- Assure that accurate physical and electronic mailing lists are maintained for JPD-YSC and JPD-RE Professionals, and JPD-paid Youth Coordinators.
Educational/Programmatic
- Oversee the work of the Coordinator for Youth Activities (CYA) with the JPD-YSC (Youth Steering Committee) to recruit, train and support members of the YSC and to provide training for adults serving as advisors to the YSC and at youth conferences.
- Work to provide district-wide training opportunities for religious educators and lay religious education volunteers, including (but not limited to) Our Whole Lives leader training, workshops at district meetings and events, New DRE Start-Ups, and other workshops and trainings as seem appropriate and timely.
- Provide either directly or through trained adjunct staff trainings, workshops, and retreat facilitation to individual congregations and clusters on specific topics requested by them in all areas of faith development.
- Be familiar with faith development curricula and related resources commonly used in congregations and provide congregations with information about such curricula and resources.
Visionary
Work with the JPD Staff, the JPD Religious Education Professionals and Lay Leaders, and JPD-YSC to fulfill and promote the current “Ends” as determined by the JPD Board for lifespan religious education and youth programming in healthy, growing local churches in the JPD by coordinating and training persons to act as facilitators and consultants to congregations in all areas of lifespan faith development; helping small and mid-size congregations to move toward having at least one trained, paid, professional religious educator working at least ½ time and compensated according to UUA Guidelines; helping congregations to provide paid youth coordinators and trained youth advisors for their youth groups.
Oversee the maintenance and improvement of the JPD Lending Library.
Consultative
Be available to consult with ministers, lay and professional religious educators, board members, and youth coordinators and advisors from individual congregations by phone and email or on-site, as necessary.
The DLFD will provide facilitation or referrals to other appropriate facilitators for all phases of the development of good working relationships between congregations and their paid, professional religious educators. The DLFD will be available to facilitate negotiated resignations as needed.
Qualifications
The DLFD must be able to travel by car and have basic computer skills. He or she must have or be willing to learn conflict management skills, an understanding of systems theory, models for youth empowerment, and must be committed to anti-racism and anti-oppression work. The position requires working with congregations of all sizes and the DLFD must be committed to the growth of Unitarian Universalism and passionate about Unitarian Universalist lifespan religious education.
Conditions of Employment
The JPD maintains a suite of offices in the heart of downtown Wilmington, DE. Given the limited space in that office suite, the DLFD has the flexibility to work from home or the office. S/he is expected to be in the District office at least every other week. The DLFD is expected to maintain good working relationships with all JPD staff.
A laptop computer, portable printer, cell phone, and other electronic equipment are furnished as necessary to enable the DLFD to perform his or her duties. The District employs administrative staff and maintains additional equipment to support the activities of the DLFD. Parking is provided in a parking garage one block from the office.
A professional expense budget is allocated on an annual basis to cover travel and other expenses related to the position. Commuting expenses to and from the JPD office will not be reimbursed.

Title: District Executive (Ohio -Meadville District)

Basic Purpose: To promote the health and growth of Unitarian Universalist (UU) congregations through the delivery of effective programs and services.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Provides leadership to foster health and growth of UU congregations by providing appropriate programming and consultation at the congregation and district level.
- Directs leadership training and consultation on leadership issues.
- Acts as a liaison between UUA Headquarters staff and congregations and districts; maintains contact with congregations and districts to ascertain needs and concerns and evaluate the effectiveness of current UUA programs.
- Either directly or through trained volunteer consulting teams, provides counsel and mediation to congregations and ministers.
- Acts as a resource to District Boards by attending board meetings and providing information on UUA policies and programs.
- Maintains knowledge of UUA principles, policies and programs and awareness of developing congregational trends and concerns.
- Manages the financial aspects of District operations.
This is an Exempt grade 14 position (minimum: $58,200) plus significant benefits. Qualifications include: graduate degree or equivalent, in depth knowledge and understanding of Unitarian Universalism, minimum of five years active involvement with Unitarian Universalist congregations and organizations, commitment to and understanding of Religious Education, counseling skills, personal religious depth, knowledge and experience of group dynamics, public speaking skills, skills in administering programs, skills/knowledge of finances and budget development and implementation, knowledge of voluntary organizations, initiative, and ability to set priorities and manage time well, ability to inspire trust and confidence in lay and professional leaders, competence in using computers and standard office applications; and training in or experience in use of policy governance would be helpful. Position Title: Assistant Director of Youth Ministries
Department: Lifespan Faith Development
Reports to: Youth Ministries Director
Basic Purpose: Assist the Youth Ministries Director in working with youth and adults to develop and support ministry with youth.
Principal Responsibilities:
- Orients, trains, and supervises the Youth Ministry Associates.
- Manages and supports the development of continental youth program events including General Assembly Youth Caucus, Youth Social Justice Training, and Chrysalis Training of Trainers.
- Working with the Youth Ministries Director, acts as consultant to the UUA at large to districts, congregations, professional religious leaders, youth advisors, and parents on youth-related matters.
- In conjunction with the Youth Ministry Associates, works with and supports the YRUU Leadership. With the YRUU Steering Committee, annually evaluates the working relationship between YRUU and the Youth Office and attends YRUU meetings and conferences.
