"The Names I Call Myself: Weaving the Beloved Community" was a post-GA gathering sponsored by DRUUMM (Diverse and Revoluntionary UU Multicultural Ministries), from 8:30 to 3 PM on Tuesday, June 29 at the Salt Lake City Marriott Hotel. This was the first time that a gathering for all people of color, lay and professional, had been held for Unitarian Universalists. There were about 50 people in attendance.
Robette Dias, president of DRUUMM said, "In worship and fellowship we explored our different racial identities and recommitted our relationships to one another. For too long, People of Color in U.S. have been separated by our differences. We in DRUUMM believe it is time to join in our differences, let them strengthen our collective. The "Names Event" celebrated both our diversity and our commonality, and explored ways to establish a healthy People of Color community within Unitarin Universalism." DRUUMM, at its GA meeting, voted to expand to include lay people as well religious professionals, another act which will strengthen the new organization.
The day included worship, exploration of identity, and planning for future meetings of the group. The sessions were led by UUA staff member Jacqui James, Director for Anti-Oppression, Education, and Resources; UU Service Committee staff member Jose Ballester and Patricia Jimenez, Chester McCall, Danielle DiBona, and Peter Morales (worship).
