1999 UUA General Assembly
278 Fulfilling the Promise of Human Rights
UU Service Committee Lecture
Valora Washington, photo by Nancy PierceJohn Buehrens introduced Dr. Valora Washington, the new Executive Director of the UUSC, saying she sings our song and hums our tune in many ways. She presented her vision of the UUSC and had the audience on its feet giving her a standing ovation.

Her vision looks forward toward justice, not backward to injustice, moves away from victimhood to seizing the future. The entrance to the 21st century represents another of history's crossroads, where we have an opportunity to change the world. Valora Washington sees the UUSC as a key player in human rights and aims to strengthen that voice by doubling the number of congregations, increasing the number of members to 50,000, and building a stable financial base. These efforts will be directed to the women of the world, the children, indigenous peoples and oppressed minorities, looking to bring them into full partnerhood and to bring reconciliation where only hate exists.
