Welcome to Long Beach!

Welcome to the fifty-ninth annual Service of the Living Tradition

The Service of the Living Tradition has deep meaning and is of real importance to us. It is, at the same time, several things.

  • It is a service of worship with hymns, liturgy, prayer, music and preaching.
  • It is at the same time a service of celebration, marking the entry, progress through and eventual retirement from active service of fellowshipped ministers and credentialed religious educators.
  • It is a memorial service for UU fellowshipped ministers and credentialed religious educators celebrating what they have given us and our world.
  • We are grateful for the commitment, courage and faithfulness of those whose lives, hopes and service we recognize here.

We are thankful for your presence and for the generosity of all those who participate in and make this service possible.

We went to press with this year's order of service before we were sure that Kathryn Deal would be our American Sign Language interpreter. We are glad that she is able to serve in that capacity again this year.

We particularly greet the families and friends of those who passed on this year for joining us for this service. We particularly want to thank the children of the Rev. Norma Veridan who will represent that group in lighting our chalice this evening.

We ask that as we name those in each group being recognized – as credentialed religious educators, as receiving preliminary ministerial fellowship status, as receiving final ministerial fellowship status, and as retiring from active service – that you hold your applause until the names of all in each group have been read, then applaud enthusiastically and with great joy and exhileration.

It is very good to be here with you.

Let the 2004 Unitarian Universalist Service of the Living Tradition now begin!
