2108 Service of the Living Tradition
Call to Worship
By Rev. David Hubner, UUA Director of Ministry
We come to this hall from all over this country, this continent
and this world.
We come because our religion, our religious communities and our
religious commitments are important to us.
We come to celebrate the newest ministries and the start of new
careers for religious educators.
We come to thank those leaders whom we have come to know and to
welcome those even at the earliest stages of their careers.
We come with deep gratitude for those who have ministered to us
and cared for us for whole careers, and whose ways and love have
shaped us and whose service has been shaped, upheld and formed by
us.
We come to celebrate their and our hope, their and our aspiration,
their and our times of confusion and failure.
We come to celebrate our and their part in building, and reshaping,
a religious tradition that speaks to us in our joy and our pain,
that helps us to love the beauty of the world and engage in redeeming
it, that recognizes whatever salvation there may be comes from building
bridges and understanding between us, not in building walls, spreading
fear and feeding misunderstanding.
We have so much to learn from so many. We have so much we can and
must do.
Living life faithfully and truly requires deep honesty, growing
integrity, abundant compassion for others and for ourselves, and
living life fully and truly requires also an informed yet abounding
hope.
We come here, now, to affirm again that this is our common work
and challenge
and our common need and joy.
We are grateful for those who now and over the years
have dedicated their lives to this work.
It is good to be companioned by them, and to have the gift to be
able to help shape their lives and service.
