4049 Change the Power Structure in Your Community
Speaker: Michael Gecan
Sponsor: Advocacy and Witness Staff Group
Michael Gecan, Beacon Press author of Going Public and
long-time community organizer, described results of changed power
structures in previously devastated areas: affordable homes, living
wages, safer streets, health facilities, and new schools with high
graduation rates. Then he outlined the steps for achieving these
successes: time, money, training and a team.
“Individual charisma is one of the most overrated qualities
of the modern era,” he said. “As Peter Drucker said,
‘the only definition of a leader is someone who has followers.’”
