The Practice of Spiritual Disciplines in the Liberal Church
UU Psi Symposium

Schuller The Unitarian Universalist Psi Symposium has been an affiliated organization of the UUA since 1969. It provides a forum for free exchange and study of topics related to metaphysics, holistic health and healing, and parapsychology. The organization sponsors workshops and lectures at General Assemblies and other UU conferences, retreats and camps. They publish a newsletter and an annual journal.

This year's Psi Symposium speaker was Rev. Michael Schuller, senior minister of 1st Unitarian Society of Madison, WI. Schuller practices and teaches spiritual disciplines like meditation, Hartha Yoga, Taiji (T'ai Chi) and Qigong (Ch'i Gong) in his church and ministry. For Schuller, the simple daily discipline of jogging is not the crowd relaxesonly for health and fitness, but also helps him to clear his mind and makes him more receptive to the inner voice of wisdom. Many times, while out jogging on a Saturday, the next morning's sermon unblocks itself.

Schuller led a short relaxation and meditation exercise before launching into his talk. He ended with a demonstration of the Taiji Qigong 18 Forms routine, performing each of the forms only once and linking them all together into a smoothly executed, continuous whole, thereby creating a unique version of the Schuller-style Short Form Taijiquan (T'ai Chi Ch'uan).

Membership in the Psi Symposium is $15 a year. For more information or to become a member, contact: Rev. Richard Fewkes, President, 6 Oakhurst Circle, Needham, MA 02192, or email fpnma@gis.net.
