Nia Steelpan Ensemble: Musical Expression in the City Planning Committee Sponsored |
Speakers: Janice Parks, Rev. Art McDonald
Some of the thousands of Unitarian Universalists attending the 40th annual General Assembly in Cleveland received a special treat -- the Nia Steelpan Ensemble performed. For those who don't know, 'steelpan' is this group's name for a steel drum. And the Nia is a group of 10-12 school age children who play the instruments together, at once, by ear, in ensemble.
The result is magical. Even though these young musicians have been playing together for only a year or so, they have already performed on an awards show hosted by Harry Belafonte. Their art can be heard in the Pittsburgh area - the group is sponsored by the Young Men and Women's African Heritage Association of Pittsburgh - during the school year.
