panel of speakersWhat does it mean to be a Unitarian Universalist minister?

For several years UU ministers and members of the Ministerial Fellowship Committee have been considering further changes in the current method of granting fellowship in three categories of ministry: parish ministry, ministry of religious education, and community ministry. The current process is documented at:

http://www.uua.org/ministry/mfc/
http://www.uua.org/ministry/preparation/
http://www.uua.org/ministry/education/

Previous major changes to the process were presented to the General Assembly in 1979 and in 1991.

A panel consisting of the Rev. Ellen Brandenburg, Ministerial Education Director of the UUA, the Rev. Marge Corletti, the Rev. Kenn Hurto, and the Rev. David Pettee held a round table discussion on these proposed changes with a number of people involved in various stages of the Ministerial Fellowship process.

In January 2001 the Ministerial Fellowship Committee (MFC) and the Unitarian Universalist Ministers Association (UUMA) jointly authored a draft document titled "A Draft Proposal to Redesign Fellowship for Unitarian Universalist Ministry."

The current schedule for developing these changes designates June 2001 through January 2002 as the time to circulate information about the current state of the proposal and gather information and feedback from stakeholders, such as current UU ministers, theological schools, students, and congregations, about their concerns and expectations of the process.

February 2002 is the target for preliminary approval of the final form of the proposed changes to the process by the UUMA (which would have a much greater role in the final fellowship process) and the MFC. May 2002 would then be the target for a final proposal to present to the 2002 General Assembly.

Most of questions raised by those attending do not have answers at this time. The purpose of this and other such meetings is to gather up just those concerns.

A copy of the draft document is available from the Rev. Ellen Brandenburg by emailing a request to her at ebrandenburg@uua.org.
