Helping our Young Men Come of Age CENTER Workshop |
||||||
At some point, every adolescent must make one of life's most important transitions - from child to adult. Dependence must be replaced by responsibility; the observer must become a participant.
In almost every culture, this transition, the passage of Initiation, must include four elements to be successful - mentored learning, practical testing, enacted ritual, and community celebration. These four elements are not necessarily sequential, but they are the important steps for the success of the individual.
Stan Crow, who is the Director of the ICA Rite of Passage Journeys Programs and the Director of Religious Education of the Woodinville Unitarian Universalist Church in Washington, has been working on creating meaningful journeys and guiding teams of mentors and young people through them for twenty years. Today, he presented the essentials of his thought and experience to more than forty Unitarian Universalist leaders in an exciting and challenging workshop.
Advice was given during the session on the wise selection of a mentor, the preparation and support of both mentors and initiates, and the importance of dramatic ritual, among many other topics. Additional information, including the ICA calendar of offerings, can be obtained from the Institute's web site or by email.
The Institute of Cultural Affairs (ICA) ia a private, not-for-profit organization concerned with the human factor in community and organization development. Its global network spans 28 countries, with an international secretariat in Brussels, Belgium.Reported for the Web by Bill Lewis
