(Cleveland, OH – June 20, 2001) In a ballroom of the Cleveland downtown Marriott
Hotel, UUA President John A. Buehrens thanked the UUA's Board of Trustees, Moderator
Denny Davidoff, and Executive Vice President Kay Montgomery for the "extraordinary
support" they have offered him over his eight years as UUA President. Buehrens
delivered his final report to the Board, asking the Board to give his successor
their support and trust. Particularly important, said Buehrens, was the Board's
enthusiastic backing of the new President's role in promoting public witness
of Unitarian Universalism which can extend the values of UUism to the wider
world. Buehrens' remarks were greeted with a standing ovation from the Board
and observers of the meeting.
Also presented were a report from Executive Vice President Montgomery, a Secretary's
Report from the Rev. Wayne Arnason, a Finance Committee Report from Chair Gini
Courter, and reports on agreements reached by the Canadian Unitarian Council
regarding their relationship with the UUA. Arnason presented a report on the
International Council of Unitarians and Universalists (ICUU); Director of International
Relations the Rev. Olivia Holmes made a report as well.
Also included in the meeting were a summary of the final report and recommendations of the Task Force on Structures and Services from co-convener Wayne Clark; a Review of By-Laws and Rules through an anti-racist lens; action on the final report of the Journey Toward Wholeness Transformation Committee; and a report from the board anti-racism assessment team. The board also heard a report on this General Assembly from Planning Committee Chair Bob Martin, the results of an accessibilities evaluation of the 2002 GA site in Quebec City; and a summary of business resolutions statements of the board which will be presented during the GA's plenary sessions from First Vice Moderator Sue Stukey.
Committee on Committees business completed the meeting, with a charge to the Committee on Socially Responsible Investing and appointments, made in Executive Session.
The UUA Board meets again on Thursday, June 21 for an additional series of reports and business to be conducted prior to the opening gavel of the General Assembly.
