On Monday morning, a small group of people came to hear about a unique program developed by Rev. Donna DiSciullo, Director of the Young Adult/Campus Ministry Office for the UUA, in cooperation with youth and young adults. The participants included a balance of ministers, lay leaders, young adults and "bridging" youth. Many of our congregations have recognized a similar pattern. Our young people leave the congregation after high school and do not return to a congregation until some major life event such as marriage or the birth of a childif ever. The program entitled "UU Backpacking: A Faith for the Road" was especially designed for people 18-22; however, it could be used at any age.
"Young people are on the move: literally, vocationally, relationally, intellectually, and spiritually," says Rev. DiSciullo. This is a time when they most need the support of a religious community and a life grounded our UU Principles. The "backpacking" theme is a metaphor used in the guide that "will take you from where you are now to where you want to be." Though it is self-paced, it is meant to be done with the support of a religious community, youth advisor, chaplain, or even a caring friend.
It is divided into six sections based on what constitutes a deep life of faith:
At the end of each stage, a patch is awardedeither from the Young Adult/Campus Ministry Office or the supporting congregation. This is a mechanism by which the user can see progress and stay connected.
- Worship
- Social Justice
- Social Service
- Community Building
- Leadership
- Learning (history, theology, understanding)
Users of the guide will complete questions, such as "If I were god I would…" They are also instructed to complete exercises. For example, in the Social Service section: "Organize and participate in a service project for your congregation, Young Adult Group or Campus Ministry group." There are also places for photos and journal entries.
The guide can be purchased from the Young Adult Campus Ministry Office for $15.00.
