About 150 persons gathered to worship at the annual Communion Service sponsored by the Unitarian Universalist Christian Fellowship. The Rev. Alma Faith Crawford, of the Church of the Open Door, Chicago, Illinois, entered the circle of chairs to lead the congregation in a number of chorales and songs, including "Deep River."The Rev. Chester McCall, of All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church, Durham, North Carolina led the liturgy. The Rev. Michael Smith, of New York, assisted him. The main service leaders -- all African-American -- brought a particular sensibility (described by the Rev. Ms. Crawford as "Pentecostal Universalist") to worship. The liturgy was rich with liberation themes, including the Exodus of Israel from Egypt. Most of the readings came from the Gospel of John.
