The fourth Youth Caucus Business Meeting began with announcements, and one of note was the announcement of how much money had been made by youth who were fundraising after the day's plenary session. The youth raised $2470 to be used in helping homeless people.Next the moderators of the meeting read off a preliminary list of nominations for the Board of Trustees observer positions and the position of Working Action Manager.
The youth then moved on to the business of the next day, Actions of Immediate Witness. Each AIW was summarized, and a brief period for comments was allowed for each. The youth then split up into groups to discuss whichever one they felt was most important. Each AIW had a group except for #2: "Protest Against Racial Profiling."
After about half an hour of group discussions, each group chose a person to give a summary of what they thought and decided. AIW #1: "Support Tibet and the Dalai Lama" was said to be an important issue on which we should stand up despite our shaky relations with China. The group discussing AIW #3: "Handgun Legislation" decided that there was a great need to close the gun show loophole, and that if the AIW was passed, lobbying and letter writing would be good ideas. The group that reviewed AIW #4: "Ending the Death Penalty" wanted it to pass and decided to join with Unitarian Universalists Against the Death Penalty. After consideration of AIW #5: "Campaign Finance Reform," youth stated that there was a need for lobbying of legislatures during the election process, and to do so especially in the two states with CFR plans coming up for a vote. Finally, the spokesperson for the group that discussed AIW #6: "Ballistic Missile Defense System" said that the ABM system would violate the sixth principle of Unitarian Universalism ("the goal of world community with peace, liberty, and justice for all").
