Shea Schachameyer, who is in charge of getting Young Religious Unitarian Universalists to become active on the topic of prison reform, led the "Making YRUU into a Progressive Social Justice Force" workshop. 50 people ranging from youth to adults came. At the Social Justice Conference, youth came to a consensus that prison reform is the issue that they desired to emphasize for youth continentally. Schachameyer said that the purpose of the workshop was to get help in fleshing out the plans and making suggestions.Schachameyer then gave some history. Since 1970 prison population in the United States has increased by 500%. Also during that time the cost rose 1500%. People have started grass roots campaigns in order to help both control the costs and address the causes of such explosive growth.
She then discussed possible actions that youth could take, including contacting prisoners, having conference (Cons) on the issue, and visiting prisoners. Schachameyer then opened the floor up for discussion of steps to take and actions to further the issue. Many ideas were forwarded, and the adults did come forward and give their input that was much appreciated by the youth.
The group decided that the best thing to do would be to try and get a flier out during the remaining period of General Assembly. Several people expressed an interest in helping with such a flier, including an adult youth advisor, and they stayed after in order to begin work.
