Close to fifty people attended this workshop held by James Walker and sponsored by the Young Religious UUs. The title may be a bit misleading, as the workshop was not about getting youth to attend General Assembly, but rather to give them a greater impact and power while there.
Walker told the assembled mix of youth, young adults, and adults that Working Action was designed by the Youth Council in 1999. The hope was to develop Working Action Issues into Social Action Issues (SAIs), and therefore into Statements of Conscience at some point. This hope arose given the success of the Youth Caucus in influencing the vote at GA 1999 on SAIs. The first issue chosen was "The Liberal Alternative to the War on Drugs." Unfortunately, due to a misunderstanding it did not quite succeed in becoming an SAI, but a very similar SAI was merged with the WAI.
Walker informed participants of the problems with the current system, and explained the process and the elections coming up in a Youth Caucus Business Meeting. Those assembled appeared to have a high level of interest in getting involved either as the Working Action Manager (WAM) or as a member of the Super Working Action Team (SWAT). Walker answered many questions, clarified the process and what is involved, and split those in attendance up into groups in order to discuss possible issues for next year.
