Young Adult Caucus Gets UnderwayOn Thursday, the Young Adult Caucus Orientation began with groups deciding their animal sound and performing it. Youth were seated according to their "HUUP" Group, each represented by an animal. Brian Richichi led the meeting and explained that HUUP is "Hardcore UU Peoples."
Next, the youth staff, easily identified by orange jumpsuits, introduced themselves and spoke about their GA responsibilities: no smoking under 18, no drinking under 21, and the curfew were highlighted. Curfew law requires minors to be indoors after midnight. By arrangement, youth may be out after curfew with their badges on if going from the last event to their rooms. Youth caucus members also received cards that include the phone number for Tom Cranston, the emergency contact, who is on call 24 hours a day. Echobase, in the Davidson Room at the Sheraton, is open to youth at all times and for the daily HUUPLA meeting.
Before the final activity of meeting as HUUP groups, UUA President John Buehrens welcomed the youth and spoke of their power. "Woe to anyone who tries to get anything passed that the youth have not endorsed!" he said. He is in the process of raising $2,000,000 to strengthen youth programs, which brought a rousing cheer.
