Marriage Equality
Today, our Unitarian Universalist faith has long since taken the lead among all other denominations with respect to Gay rights. We have hundreds of openly Gay ordained clergy. We have solemnized thousands of Gay union services. It is right that we should once again take the lead with regard to extending the full rights and privileges of marriage to all our citizens.
—Rev. Forrest Church
(from sermon "The Meanings of Marriage")
As Unitarian Universalists (UUs), we believe that our First Principle, respecting "the inherent worth and dignity of every person," applies equally to people of all sexual orientations and gender identities. UU congregations and clergy have long recognized and celebrated same-sex marriages within our faith tradition. However, we recognize that full equality can only be achieved when it is recognized legally in society. Thus, working for full equality for bisexual, gay, lesbian, and transgender persons is one of our highest legislative priorities. NEW!! The Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA), The Unitarian Universalist Legislative Ministry of California, and other religious leaders and faith organizations representing millions of members have filed a petition with the California Supreme Court asking the Court to invalidate Proposition 8. The petition argues that Proposition 8 poses a severe threat to the guarantee of equal protection for all and was not enacted through the constitutionally required process for such a dramatic change to the California Constitution. The full text of the petition is available (PDF).
NEW!! In light of the recent passage of Proposition 8 in California and similar measures in three other states, which restrict the rights of bisexual, gay, lesbian, queer, and transgender people, the Unitarian Universalist Association has produced a video that makes clear that we as people of faith support marriage equality. The video uses images, gathered from Unitarian Universalists across North America who have advocated for marriage equality, been joined in equal marriage, and/or had their marriage officiated by Unitarian Universalist clergy.
We invite you to learn more about Unitarian Universalism and our commitment to full marriage equality.
