Frederic G. Melcher Book Award
The Frederic G. Melcher Book Award is given annually to a work published
in the United States during the past calendar year judged to be the
most significant contribution to religious liberalism. The award is
in the form of $2,000 cash plus a certificate given in memory of the
former dean of American publishers, and is sponsored by the UUA.
The funds for the Melcher Award were bequeathed to the UUA in
1980, by Daniel Melcher, son of Frederic G. Melcher, founder of
Publishers Weekly and distinguished Unitarian layman, designated
for the Frederic G. Melcher Book Award. The Award is given annually
to a work judged to be the most significant contribution to religious
liberalism.
Frederic Melcher conceived the idea of the Award as an extension
of liberal religion, but he died before the first award was made
in 1964. His son continued the award after his death.
All submissions must be nominated by either a Melcher judge
or by the publisher. The panel of judges are listed on the Melcher Book Award Committee website.
Nominations due: January 31
